The Metropolitan Cathedral of Medellín, considered an icon of the city, has just undergone an intervention to modernize its sound system and provide the place of worship with a first-class acoustic experience.
The massive temple faced several challenges related to its ancient sound system. After years of use, the equipment not only showed signs of deterioration, but also failed regularly.
In addition, the sound quality was below modern standards and the technology available to facilitate the tuning of choirs and groups was absent, as could be established through exhaustive acoustic measurement work, carried out beforehand, on site.
In this way, it was determined that in the vast enclosure there were a series of areas whose acoustic characteristics and sound challenges varied from each other.
Particularly challenging were places such as the episcopal chair, the baldachin raised above the altar and the transept at the height of the transept, due to factors such as the abundant presence of materials such as marble, the great spatial heights and the presence of concavities.
The need for an update was evident and the mission of carrying out the project to bring the sound of the cathedral to 21st century levels fell on the integrator AVTech Ltda, headed by José Rojano, who had the collaboration of the company Ambientes Inteligentes.
"One of the most complex challenges of the project was given by the age and heritage condition of the site, which forced the integrity of the structure to be respected when intervening on it," said Juan Fernando Montoya, from Ambientes Inteligentes.
A modern, comprehensive sound system was designed to meet the specific needs of the cathedral. Brands such as Audac, DreamSound, Electrovoice, TOA, RDL, among others, were carefully selected to ensure exceptional performance and long-lasting reliability.
New technologies were implemented to improve sound quality and facilitate the operation of the system, allowing easy set-up for the choirs and groups that regularly perform in the cathedral.
The transformation was impressive. The Metropolitan Cathedral of Medellín now has a sound system that exceeds expectations. The sound quality is exceptional, providing an unmatched listening experience for parishioners and visitors.
In addition, the modern integrated technology facilitates the operation of the system, allowing precise control and easy set-up for events and presentations.
